If you are travelling on public roads to Roper Bar (the Roper Highway begins on the Stuart Highway just south of Mataranka) and on to Borroloola and do not intend to leave the gazetted road, you do not need a permit.

However, if you want to stay more than overnight at any of the designated camping spots, you may need a permit.
Please check with the NLC office in Borroloola.
You can travel to Borroloola from Roper Bar (see above), on the Carpentaria Highway, from Daly Waters on the Stuart Highway, or, from Queensland, on the road through Garawa Aboriginal Land Trust. No permits are required for any of these routes.
